The Advertising Copywriter – How to Become a Lean, Mean Ad Copy Machine
Posted: Dec 14, 2010 |Comments: 0

To do this you will need at least a BA Degree and a passion for selling. This is an ideal model for an advertising copywriter and the prerequisite that most ad agencies look for. If you don’t have a degree it might take a little longer, but that’s not to say you won’t do well if you have a knack for selling, and are able to write well. It just means that it will take you a little longer to get to the top of your game.
In fact, the more selling you do from an early age, the better. This will stand you in good stead for when you finally arrive at your dream career destination. There’s a lot of hype about glamour in this industry, but it’s really all about being able to manage your time, deadlines and still be able to create really good ad copy. This is not an easy task and you have to be able to deliver, come rain or shine, it’s what really sets you apart as a professional.
Deadlines are deadlines and they shouldn’t be broken, and as the pressure mounts and waves of new work pours in, you might find yourself working through the night on some jobs. If you can’t take the pace then this is not the job for you. There are those who embrace pressure, it’s seems to get their creative juices flowing – and if you’re one of these creatively charged individuals, then this is the perfect position for you.
Just Do It. I’m Lovin It. A Diamond is Forever.
Shoes, Burgers and Diamonds – If you can write a mean slogan, you’re well on your way to becoming a five star advertising copywriter.
Your Resume
Your resume has to be honed to get a creative director’s notice. You have the skill, all you have to do is put it all together to impress, in a clear sophisticated way that highlights your creativity, and sets you apart from everyone else. This is a competitive field and there’ll be tons of English and Journalism majors who will be contending for your position. Find the right format online and see how other advertising copywriters present their resumes, or send yours to a professional to rework and finish properly.
The ‘I Like Words’ Portfolio
Your portfolio should be the next piece of ammunition that will wow the creative director. This is where you can show the work that you’ve been accumulating that has already been published at school or any projects you’ve finished elsewhere. If you haven’t got anything to work with, it’s no train smash just invent something or do a mock add on an existing product.
Write a perfect headline, a tagline and some great copy. Use the same font as your resume and type them up and organize them to make the best of your portfolio. It’s also a good idea to put down some of the great ideas you’ve had in your book and organize them into the various marketing disciplines. Striking images with bold, snappy advertising copy will work wonders, so make sure you have at least three examples in your portfolio.
Advertising Internships
Getting an internship at an ad agency is what you should aim for, even if you don’t have a degree. If for example there’s an opening in the media department, you will learn more about media than copywriting but it is a step in the right direction. If you can slot into a copywriting internship and are allowed to focus on your primary objectives, your options won’t be so limited.
What you have to try and do is turn your internship into a job offer. If there are particular agencies that you like and you’re hell bent on getting into the creative department, try and set up an interview with the creative director and show them what you’ve got – remember there’s no room for reservation when you’re in sales.
Once you’re in, you can ask for a copywriting assignment, or better still try and team up with some of the solid senior creative people who will give you invaluable insight and training. This is a fast paced industry and you have to be sharp, focused and ready. Try and attend the weekly meetings where new and current projects are discussed in the hope of getting a few assignments to work on.
Getting into an agency without a degree is rare but not impossible. If you’re a natural with great ability, your chances of landing a position are greater. It may not be in the department you’re most interested in, but it’s a stepping stone, and you’ll have to work on setting up milestones to achieve your primary objectives.
Tips for Becoming a Great Advertising Copywriter
• You have to be sales orientated, try and experience sales across the board, expose yourself to anything and everything to do with sales.
• Get a College Degree or BA Degree, it’s the acceptable norm in the industry. If you have done a couple of marketing or advertising courses and have a natural talent, you also stand a good chance of scooping up a junior copywriting position if your portfolio shines.
• Do whatever it takes to build up your portfolio, even if it means working for nothing, you have a reputation to build and starting early has its benefits.
• If you’re not sure if the passion is there, make enquiries at an ad agency or corporation and ask to “shadow” an advertising copywriter to get a feel for the work environment and the position.
• Get yourself into an internship program at a large corporation. In their marketing department you will get hands on experience and it’s a great way to build your portfolio.
• Never stop studying ads, whether they’re good, bad or ugly – if it’s been known to sell a lot of products, then you want to know why.
Becoming an advertising copywriter requires discipline. The demands are tough and deadlines can be grueling. You will use up enormous amounts of mental and emotional energy, and it’s definitely not your average 9 – 5 job. You also have to learn to be creative on demand and be able to move from sublime to ridiculous in seconds.
If you’re a creative genius the pay is great and so are the perks. You will be working alongside creative people who will make your career interesting. Like any job there are highs and lows – and believe it when people say there is no room for an overly sensitive individual in this career. You need steel cahonies for a job like this! With drive, creativity and a bold attitude you will go far as an advertising copywriter.

Web Copywriter â Marketing via Internet
Posted: Dec 28, 2010 |Comments: 0

The tasks that web copywriters perform include direct pitch sales, content writing, and other things. A web copywriter not only just writes sales copies for internet, but is also responsible to increase traffic to websites by using words. Generally he/she is a person who is undertaking promotional activities via internet.
To become a web copywriter, the qualifications may vary. Many are trained in different fields like marketing, journalism or literature; others have experience writing offline ad copies for reputed companies. These qualities can be inborn as well as learnt from various places that offer services like how to write specifically for the web.
A copywriter’s job involves a variety of work. He/She may be required to create eye catching titles for pages, write attractive advertisement text to appeal visitors as well as informational content. Content with sensible usage of keywords will help to improve search engine ratings for your websites. You may have outstanding content of your products and services however it is worthless if customers do not visit your site. The main objective of content writing is to increase traffic and number of visitors.
Ever since the search engine optimization became a reality, web copywriting and SEO became a perfect match. Diverting traffic to your websites is valuable only if they can be converted into your permanent clients. Hence an expert web copywriter has the talent to convert your website into a sales machine by appealing content whereas SEO services are the online marketing drives that are working on diverting the traffic to your sites.
A web copywriter to write effective and appealing content must have the expertise in the products and services offered by your company. He/She could be researching as well as editing. Editing surely plays a vital role in this process. Eliminating grammatical and spelling errors is very necessary to promote your site and create a good impression about company’s professionalism.
It is very necessary that such a writer develops the skills and a keen understanding of online marketing. A good copy can do wonders to your product and services. There are a few basic rules to be followed to produce a good web copy.
Analyze Your Target Audience:
You need to know who will be reading your writing, and what are they expecting from your site. This can help you decide what writing tone to use and most appropriate writing styles. You will know the needs of your readers, and hence it will become easy to give them what they are looking for.
Make Your Writing Inspirational:
You should try to think outside the box. Be different from the industry and your competitors. To achieve this goal it is important that you do a lot of research before you start cramming your site with boring content.
Go back to basics:
Stick to language that is error prone. Bring down the level of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes to zero percent. Hook the readers to interesting information with appropriate sprinkle of keywords. Make your content easy to read. Emphasize on correct sentence structure and try to make them concise.
Proofing and editing:
Recheck your work again and again. Do not criticize if you find an error rather encourage yourself to hunt for more. Sometimes your grammar or spellchecker cannot even spot minor mistakes which can stamp your copy with a bad impression.

Hire A Copywriter Who Will Deliver The Best Results For Your Service Business
Posted: Dec 30, 2010 |Comments: 0
|
As a service business owner, you know you need to send a compelling message to prospects. You need a website that communicates your message in a way that reaches your niche… without sounding sales-y.
But if you are a busy service business owner, you face a challenge. You are busy seeing clients, so you don’t have time to create your own content. You might even wonder if you need to learn new skills: copywriting calls for unique styles of writing that aren’t found elsewhere. Often a do-it-yourself option is not unrealistic.
So why not outsource your content creation? You need to find a copywriter. You need to be sure your services will be represented accurately. Your message needs to sound authentic to your website visitors.
Therefore, it’s not surprising to learn that these three words will send shivers down the spine of most business owners: “Hire a copywriter.”
If you feel this way you are in good company. My clients share tales of copywriters who
… didn’t “get” their message (and charged for revision) … refused to listen to what they said … wrote copy that seemed designed to induce sleep, not sales
and (most lethal of all) … didn’t make a difference to the bottom line.
Why does this happen? And how can you avoid these outcomes?
(1) Begin with a bite-sized project.
A complimentary “get-acquainted” call or meeting will be helpful – but you won’t get a sense of how your copywriter works till you become a paying client.
What’s bite-sized? That depends on you and the size of your ultimate project. A half hour “breakthrough” may be enough for a small project. A longer project may require several hours of diagnosis and strategy.
and that might be all you need for now.
(2) Watch for these red flags:
– a low-ball hourly rate. I met “Adrienne” at a networking meeting. She was thrilled to find a copywriter with a low hourly rate… till she realized she was paying more than most of us would have quoted for the whole project.
– avoiding a project quote. Get a written quote for the project – and ask how many revisions are included. No surprises!
– diving right into your project. Trained copywriters will *insist* on getting background and diagnostics before they write the first word.
(3) Call your copywriter early.
Often copywriters will help you save on branding and web design. Even more important, working with a copywriter can help you gain clarity on your niche and your strategy.

Using a Call to Action in Copywriting
Posted: Jan 02, 2011 |Comments: 0
|
The more I get involved with internet marketing, the more I appreciate the importance of good copywriting, and specifically the need to use a call to action.
If you’ve ever read an effective advertisement, then you know it’s all about the call to action. You want people to read your ad and feel immediately compelled to do something. You have to balance coming on too strong with the fact that you don’t want people to just sit there with your message idle in their minds. Good copywriting within advertising is all about an effective call to action that reaches out and grabs the readers.
If you don’t present the copywriting correctly, you can immediately turn away your reader. Your call to action needs to be powerful but it also needs to be subtle enough that the reader doesn’t feel as though you are shouting at them or directing them to do what you want them to do. People don’t like to be told what to do, so good copywriting within this medium must certainly be compelling but also balanced. It can be quite helpful to think back to advertisements you have experienced which have caused you to feel that you need to get up and act right away—these are excellent examples to mirror.
It can be helpful as you work on copywriting that has a call to action to create a sense of urgency. You don’t necessarily want to go with the cliché sayings such as “while supplies last” but you do want your copywriting to focus on what’s in it for the reader if they act now. This is a very effective call to action as readers feel like they’re getting something for nothing. For example if they were already planning to purchase the given product but through your copywriting they see that they can get a significant discount, this becomes a win-win in their mind. This is a very simple but highly effective call to action as people recognize the importance and the value of acting now and getting a bonus throw in at the same time.
It can be a fine balance and one of the more challenging aspects of copywriting to create an effective call to action that will draw in the reader rather than turn them away. Think of language that you find to be effective and not insulting in the advertisements that you have reacted to. While you don’t want your copywriting to come across as an infomercial, you do want to draw people into acting as quickly as possible and getting something done.

You probably realise that the text on your website and other media content is important, but you probably don’t realise just how much relevance it all has. The text on your website for example is important for a number of reasons.
Firstly when people read what you have to say on your website this will help them create an opinion of you and your business. It is obvious that you want this impression to be a good one. So the text on your website needs to be punchy, well written and of course grammatically correct.
However did you know that search engines also look at the text written on your website? Search engines such as Google need to use different methods in order to decide how to order websites when someone searches for a phrase. This is all to do with search engine optimisation (SEO) and just how relevant your website is to what you have to sell, which of course is all down to the text that you use.
Sound confusing? If it is not something that you are used too or trained in then the whole process can seem a little daunting. However thankfully there are people that offer this service professionally. If you hire a copywriter then they can take a look at your website and the keywords that you want to target within your website and make sure that the text is all relevant. A copywriter can also write a number of other different articles, which can then be distributed throughout the internet in order to help with your search engine rankings. What you should really do is look at hiring a professional copywriter as soon as possible for your writing needs. It makes sense that you get all the text on your media right, because after all you want to be as high up the search engines as possible so that you can get as much traffic as you can and then turn this traffic into sales for your business. Everything you do for your business should be about generating sales, and a copywriter can really help with that in both the short and the long term.

Why You Need a Professional Copywriter for Writing Your Web Content
Posted: Jan 30, 2011 |Comments: 0

While it may be true that you are absolutely gifted with the pen, the only way that you would not need a professional Copywriter for writing your web content would be if you are all of the following:
1) Almost as popular a search phrase as “Tom Cruise” post his jumping on Oprah Winfrey’s couch; and therefore in absolutely no need of Search Engine Optimization writing efforts!
2) Have made it your business to be as good at internet marketing as you are in your own business!
3) Do not only understand the nuances of the English language up to almost a Shakespearean degree, but, also have endless hours to devote to meticulous writing, copy editing and proof-reading!
Now, seriously, you do need a professional Copywriter for your website, as well as for all your internet marketing and advertising writing!
… And, this is mainly because:
1) You Are Really Not as Famous as Tom Cruise!
You may not have the opportunity of being on The Oprah Winfrey Show in the near future to enthusiastically exalt about your life, so, remember, unless people know you and know what you are up to, there will not be much traffic to your website. If there’s one thing SEO experts and SEO writers know, it’s how to get relevant traffic to you. And, no, you don’t need to be famous for that to happen!
2) While You Were Spending All Your Time Becoming Proficient in Your Business, Copywriters Everywhere Were Becoming Proficient In Theirs!
Even if you are as proficient at internet marketing, SEO writing, SEM writing, as the best Copywriter you know, you’d still better hand over the job to him or her — Otherwise, you’ll have to find someone to do your job, while you are busy writing. A Copywriter, maybe? I hope I have made my point!
3) Before You Read This Article, You Were Never Quite Sure Whether it Was “Copywriter”, or “Copy-writer”, or “Copy Writer”!
Okay, you may know this one if you just googled “Do I really need a professional copywriter”, but, English really is a complex-enough language by itself, and then, add to it all the rules of copywriting and internet marketing and you have a mix that really is best handled by someone who does this kind of thing every day.
You will probably never get more sound business advice: “Stop googling this topic now!” – Get yourself a professional Copywriter and the rewards will be manifold. Just confirm this with a few people you know, who have managed to start and sustain a profitable business on-line.
Here’s to the growth of your business through the cyber-world!

Gary Halbert said, “All societies advance on the backs of their neurotics.” Gary would know since he constantly vacillated from genius to insanity. There was no stability in Gary’s later life…only the extremes of experience that fueled his incredibly effective copywriting. As many of his friends say, “Gary’s copy was anything but boring. You either loved or hated him or both depending on his mood.” I had the unique opportunity to video and photo Gary’s funeral memorial service and party. You will see from the testimonials and memorial service that Gary Halbert was one of the most unique humans God ever created. Gary’s family has permitted me to make available these videos so others will be better able to experience his greatness, genius and also his uniqueness. WARNING: Some of these testimonials are as extreme as Gary’s life so listen with caution to the eulogies of those who loved and worked with him. If you enjoy what you see and hear, please comment, subscribe to my chanel and add my videos to your favorites. I guarantee I will be providing information and amazing perspectives of reality in the near future that will blow your mind. Below is a letter I wrote to Gary while he was still alive and suffering from severe depression. Dear Gary, I heard through the grapevine you could use some cheering up so here is my best effort. You are a great man, although very controversial. You are a pioneer in spreading the knowledge of the power of copywriting! You are anything but …
