6 Golden Rules For Hiring A Copywriter

It can be a daunting task when faced with writing a sales letter, but you don’t have to do it yourself. Instead you can outsource it and hire a copywriter to do it for you.
There are 6 golden rules to follow when you are looking to hire a good copywriter so check these out and get answers from the person you are looking to hire.
Rule One – How Good Are They?
For many people the only way to get first class copy that pulls in order after order is to hire a talented copywriter.
Easy isn’t it? BUT… not everyone who decides to call themselves a copywriter is one! Copywriting is a specific skill that not all writers have and you want someone who can write a simple sales letter that has impact and will pull in sales for your product or service.
You need to know if they are earning a living from copywriting and if it is their full time job or just something they do to earn a bit extra on the side.
Rule Two – How Much Do They Charge?
The old adage of ‘you get what you pay for’ has been around for years for a reason. When you are starting out it’s tempting to choose the lowest quote for a job, but I am sure you’ve heard the analogy for a £500 brain surgeon versus the £50,000 brain surgeon….who would you trust more?
Some copywriters charge by the hour; it’s not a good situation for you because you are not providing any incentive to get the job finished on time and on budget? Ask if they charge for revisions or not, and you also want to know exactly how many revisions are included in the price. Personally, I prefer to hire by the project and have a set number of revisions for free so that way I know exactly what my costs are going in.
Rule Three – Are They Dependable?
However good someone may be, if they are not dependable then you are going to be looking at trouble along the way. You usually hire a copywriter because it’s not a skill that you possess, or you have a deadline that you can’t meet by yourself.
I suggest caution if someone says they can accommodate last minute rush jobs. It sounds good, but what it means is that to do your job they will push someone else’s job to the back of the queue to get your business. The problem here is that the next time you hire them yours could be the job that goes to the end of the line.
When asking for references always include a question about how reliable they were on delivering on time.
Rule Four – Can They Work Long Distance?
Copywriters are available all over the world, from individuals working out of their home to huge teams contracted to an agency. If you are hiring a copywriter outside your own country, then make sure that they are fluent in your own language.
Many horror stories abound of people who hired ‘cheaper’ copywriters and then spent days correcting language, grammar and spelling. With the technology available today for live emails and video conferencing a professional copywriter can work with anyone, anywhere on the planet. Your ideal is someone who can work without constant supervision or ‘hand holding’ and is happy to have no face-to-face meetings.
Rule Five – Are They Easy To Work With?
They may be on the other side of the world, but your copywriter is going to be part of your team so they must be easy for you to work with. You are the boss and you want someone you will find easy to work with. Not someone who doesn’t listen to your suggestions, refuses to take direction from you or is unwilling to compromise.
As the client you have the final say, but when you are paying for expertise it pays to listen. They have an expertise you don’t so if they make suggestions to you listen, take on board what they are saying and ask questions.
If you still disagree then acknowledge their concerns (on paper or email) and explain why you want to go with your suggestions. Not only will things go more smoothly, but you get an opportunity to learn more about what makes a good copywriter and add to your own skills.
Rule Six – What Have They Done Before?
You ideally want to hire a copywriter with experience, but what kind of experience? It must be relevant to your market and your products. If they have written sales pages aimed at teenagers and your niche market is senior businessmen then it could work, but you are taking a risk.
So check them out and ask for samples of what they have done before and contact details for at least two references. You can also tell a lot about a freelance copywriter by the company they keep. Ask to see their client list, and notice how comfortable a fit it is with you and your business. Would you like to be associated with people or companies on their list?
Summary
By asking these questions and listening to the answers you are on your way to successfully hiring your first copywriter. Once you find someone who you are happy to work with AND who produces great work for you, stay with them and develop a long lasting relationship.

SEO copywriting, or search engine optimization copywriting is the process of writing the text for websites in a way that is easily read by the web surfer. This technique also uses keywords within the writing content so that the article appears high on the list when the keyword is searched for. SEO copywriting uses specific searchable words within headings, titles, and descriptions on the web page to help the article pull up with searches. Search engines want pages full of content to pull up during searches versus web pages that are really just additional pages, sometimes called “doorway pages.” The doorway pages are created for the sole purpose of achieving high rankings.
SEO copywriting helps with finding valuable content pages when searching for anything on the web. It helps search engines by allowing pertinent pages full of viewable writing rank high on the list once a subject is searched for. SEO copywriting overall improves the high ranking for pages on most all search engines. Individuals involved with SEO copywriting believe that even when a search criteria, or algorithm, is changed slightly, this technique keeps the pages high on the search list. There are debates whether this really occurs or not, since the way something pulls up is by an exact match.
This method does have disadvantages and may not be the answer for every website. SEO copywriting can be expensive due to the professionals that write these pages not coming cheap. SEO copywriting can only target one to two words per page so a website may need several pages to get all of the keywords they desire. Also if a web page needs to be altered, it destroys the work of the SEO copywriter or the copywriter must be called in again to re-do the pages. SEO copywriting does not work for highly competitive markets where too many are trying to gain high rankings, such as health, children, insurance, and hotels. SEO copywriting does not work for certain websites simply because the layout of the website contains pages with small amounts of text. Some websites do not want to alter their site just for the purpose of search engines.
SEO copywriting can be very important for doing business and bringing more traffic to a website; however, it’s not meant for every website. SEO copywriting can work for some websites for a while having the website pop up under the top 10 search results. Then other websites can use the optimization method and the one that used to be in the top 10 drops one by one until they are not even on the first page of results.

Web Copywriting Made Easy: A 5-Step Formula to Becoming a Successful Copywriter
For anyone who wants to be a successful copywriter, there’s a lot to consider and some work to be done. Web copywriting can be difficult, and if it’s not done correctly, the results will unfortunately be poor.
Copywriting made easy requires you to do the following:
1. Know your audience. If you can’t say who you’re marketing to, how are you supposed to sell them anything? You should have a target market, and when you find one and learn about its needs, you have a better chance of being a successful copywriter.
2. Know your product or service. Like your market, you have to know your product through and through. Placing a few open-ended ideas in your copy can sometimes leave people wanting to find out more, and that can keep them coming back. Being vague, though, just makes it seem like your Web copywriting skills aren’t strong enough to explain your product or service. People won’t want to buy from you if you don’t know what you’re selling.
3. Showcase the value of what you can offer to customers. There aren’t too many truly new products or services out there. So, copywriting made easy requires that you show people why what you’re offering is better and more valuable than what someone else (i.e., your competitor) is offering.
4. Write for your customers, not for yourself. You have your own preferences for the sorts of things you like to read, but you have to anticipate what your customers want to know. Cast your Web copywriting with the correct tone and focus, and customers will respond in a positive way to what you have to say.
5. Keep working on the craft. A successful copywriter writes. A lot. Web copywriting is different from writing intended for print, and practice makes perfect, so it’s very important that you keep writing. That’s true even if your first attempts aren’t as good as you’d hoped.
By taking these steps and following them carefully, over time your Web copywriting skills will improve. You’ll be a successful copywriter, and you’ll see your business grow. Copywriting made easy isn’t a myth, but nothing is free – you still have to take action and work at becoming better to realize optimum business success.

There is a great deal of direct response copywriting in the world today. Direct response copywriting can take several different forms. It could encompass a direct-mail campaign as well as direct response ads. When you talk about direct response advertising, there is a great deal of competition. Many companies employ direct response copywriting so you must make sure that you have different ways for your advertising to stand up. When you are doing direct response copywriting, you should make sure that you are writing to your prospects as you would write to a friend. This will be slightly formal but informal in the sense that you are writing to the person in a conversational tone. You do not need to stick to a certain length of space within your writing but rather write until what you need to say has been said.
Direct response copywriting is a complex subject so you should read more about this subject because a formula has been developed that you can use. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel when you’re copywriting because that involves more work on your part and people have taken the time and effort to test the different parts of the letter to maximize the current formula and wring out the most sales possible with a direct response copywriting campaign. There are three main parts usually to a direct response letter. These are the headline, the offer, and the postscript. The headline is the most read part of your sales letter so you must make sure to grab your prospects’ attention immediately. If you do not grab their attention, you’ll find that your direct response copywriting letter is at the bottom of the trashcan along with many other junk letters. The second most important part of the letter is the postscript. This is where you will be giving an incentive for someone to respond immediately to what you have to offer. With the offer, you want to make sure that this explains in great detail what a person will receive if they take you up on your offer. The postscript will offer further incentives so that the person will respond immediately.
Hopefully this article on direct response copywriting has benefited you. The key behind direct response copywriting is that you want the person to immediately respond to the offer that you have presented. Good copywriting is done by following the formulas that have been established. By focusing upon the three main parts such as the headline, the offer, and the postscript, you will be setting yourself up to have a high success rate. Direct response copywriting can be very effective and produce great sales for you or your clients if you do it correctly so be sure to continue to learn more about the subject.

What You Need to Know Before You Hire a Copywriter

Most businesses go to great lengths to ensure their brand message is portrayed accurately and that they have a strong web presence. However, it is my experience that many companies will invest in a functional website, an eye-catching brochure design, and jump through hoops to find the right people to help them market and promote.
The one area that is often neglected is one of the most important aspects of your marketing-your marketing message. The words you use are equally if not more important than the images and the design. Your message is what connects you to prospects. Your copy tells people what you do and whom you serve, and shows your brand personality.
If you use poorly written marketing materials to promote your business, you’re most likely turning prospects away. Copy that is irrelevant to your brand message, poorly written, or riddled with spelling and grammatical errors looks unprofessional to potential customers and competitive businesses alike. Whether you’re looking to hire a copywriter to write your online marketing materials, press releases, or your web copy, it’s essential that he or she is an expert in his or her craft. Ideally, you want a copywriter that will listen to your needs, has a solid understanding of your brand, services, products, and company culture, writes compelling marketing copy, delivers on time, and is professional from beginning to end.
Easier said than done, I know.
To ensure you find the right copywriter for your marketing message, I’ve created a list of questions to ask yourself before you sign on the dotted line.
1. Can they right? Yes, I spelled “right” wrong. You would be surprised at how many copywriters make these mistakes in the final copy. Aside from proper spelling, can the copywriter form proper sentences? Is the grammar correct? All of these elements, if done incorrectly, can make your business look hasty and unprofessional.
2. What does their sample work reveal? Look through some samples of previous work. With a good copywriter, it doesn’t matter whether or not he or she has written about your industry because it is a copywriter’s job to research your business and know everything about your company before a single word is written. The important thing to look for is whether or not the person has the ability to effectively communicate to the target audience.
3. What do their personal marketing materials look like? Look at their web copy, press releases, blog, and even their social media presence. Doing so will help you get a feel for how they market themselves. You can also get an idea of personality, business savvy, and industry expertise by looking through their marketing materials. Do they know how to market themselves appropriately? If not, you probably don’t want them to market for you.
4. Are they business savvy? A good writer can write. A great copywriter can both write and understand how the business world works. Writing copy isn’t about flowery language and sounding literary. It’s about getting prospects to act, to purchase from you. Along with reviewing copywriters’ marketing materials, talk to them on the phone. Listen for the questions they ask you. Are they dedicated to your goals and objectives? Do they listen? Do they understand the meaning of a deadline? If you’re not confident with the copywriter after the phone conversation, he or she is probably not a good fit for you.
5. How quickly did they respond to you after your first inquiry-whether via phone or email? Time is everything when you reach out to copywriters. If they take two days to get back to you, they may take two extra days past set deadlines to deliver your copy. You want a copywriter that delivers when he or she promises to deliver.
6. Do they have testimonials? Taking some time to read what previous clients have to say about the copywriter’s work is an easy and effective way to get an idea for the copywriter’s approval rate.
7. Do they offer a rewrite? Great writing means rewriting-it comes with the job. Be wary of copywriters who want to charge you a ton of money for rewrites. Ask them about their policy beforehand.
8. Do they have an editor? Who edits the copywriters’ work? Do they have a second pair of eyes looking over their work?
9. Do they understand SEO? If they don’t have a clear understanding of SEO, they will not be able to optimize your web copy accordingly. Your keywords will be off, and you won’t get found in search engines if they do not understand SEO.
10. What does your gut tell you? If you find that perfect copywriter and you still have that gut feeling that something isn’t right, listen to your gut. It will never lead you astray.

Angel Business Ltd has just launched its second business, Angel Copywriting. Why?, because they were looking for a great copywriting service that offers quality copy, written by industry experts, but couldn’t find one that offered this service at a good price.

Angel Copywriting was looking for online copywriting services for Angel SEO (their first start up) and contacted 20 of the top copywriting companies. After receiving some very expensive quotes, only one company followed up the quote. Whyâ¦.well maybe because the quote wasn’t for a huge amount, or maybe because large companies don’t care about building relationships with SMEsâ¦. Is it not worth their while?
