Keyword Research: Inside the House or Contract

Should I hire keyword research or should I do it myself?

A number of related issues go into the answer to that core question. Here are some of the most significant of those related variables:

1. How fully you understand finding the keywords pertinent to your niche and those that are closely related to your niche

2. Access to the tools that are available to assist in this process

3. Familiarity with using those keyword research tools

4. Your interpretive abilities when it comes to the surprisingly complex task of keyword analysis

5. The total funds that are available for you to grow your business

As you can see, all of these come down to what you know and how much money you have to dedicate to this part of your Internet business plan. Let me address each of those in a bit more detail.

Your Knowledge of Keyword Research

There is no aspect of online business that is more important than identifying appropriate keywords. Your list will form the basis of all of your search engine optimization efforts, your advertising campaigns (PPC and others), your copywriting and your article marketing efforts (as well as your other content syndication). The entire future of you business is directly related to the quality of your keyword research.

Some available tools are free to use, such as Google’s keyword research tool. Others can be purchased as desktop software or as online membership applications. It is important to use multiple tools for your research, because results will different based upon the databases that the tools consult and the formulas with which they conduct their searches. You must study the [various |]keyword research tools.

While use of the tools is relatively simple, in most cases, interpreting the results can be very tricky if you do not yet have considerable experience or a significant knowledge base. Not all of the keywords that are uncovered are of equal value to a business, and a high volume of searches for a certain keyword does not automatically make that keyword of greater importance to you particular business than another keyword that draws much less traffic.

Financial Issues

I believe that even if your funds are limited, keyword research is so important that, if you are not capable of conducting and interpreting the study, this is a place to spend those precious financial resources. The cost of a keyword research package is relatively small when it is compared to the potential benefit. It is especially useful if the professionals that you hire also provide a competition analysis and include advice regarding how to compete with the established businesses in your market.

Often keyword research is bundled into an overall search engine optimization (SEO) contract. These contracts are considerably more expensive. If you choose to go this route (contracting for an SEO package), be absolutely certain that your SEO company will be extremely thorough in its keyword research and that the complete keyword list is included in your report from that company.

It is possible to handle all of this on your own, if you are willing to take the time and invest the money in learning how to do it the correct way. Of course, you must also plan to invest in some of the software tools, as well.

How Tracking Conversion Rates Can Help You Meet Your Sales Goals

How many leads do you need to make the amount of money you want to have in a year? This may seem like a simple question, but I haven’t found a lot of folks that have the answer.

There are two things to consider regarding this question.  First, there are your expenses.  You should make sure to have an online accounting program advanced enough to help you analyze your costs and how they relate to your profitability. 

The next factor to take into consideration is how successful you are at converting sales from your leads (conversion rate).  If you are successful at lead conversion, you will see a significant improvement to your bottom line. 

Let’s take a look at the process more closely:

The first thing you will do is to work out what sales level you want to achieve each month. Let’s use $100,000 as the figure for our purposes.

Now you need to figure out your conversion rate. Let’s suppose that all of your leads are generated through you website in order to keep this example simple. 

Suppose you convert 2 and a half out of 1000 visitors into paying customers. That’s a .25% conversion rate.

Use this formula to figure out how many visitors you would need to your website to acquire enough leads to get the sales you want.  To keep it easy, suppose that each conversion will ultimately result in a sale.

(Desired Sales / Sale Price / Conversion Rate) X 100

So, if you want $100,000 in sales and your average sale price is $20, with a conversion rate of .25%, the formula would look like this:

($100,000 / $20 / .25) X 100 = 2,000,000 visitors needed per month to achieve your sales goal.

Yikes!  That’s a bunch of visitors!  Luckily, there are a few adjustments you can make.  You can increase the average sales price. You can change your visitation, or you can change your conversion rate.

Most find the easiest fix is to improve conversion rate. It is very possible to increase to ablut 2% from an original .25% rate.

Look at how that will affect the calculation:

($100,000 / $20 / 2) X 100 = 250,000 visitors per month to achieve your sales goal.

That’s a nice change! 

You can improve things even more by raising your average sale to $47:

($100,000 / $47 / 2) X 100 = 106,383 visitors per month to achieve your sales goal.
